Manchester United football returns on Saturday lunchtime, after what feels like an eternity. October starts with a bang for the Red Devils, as Jose Mourinho’s men take on Liverpool at Anfield.
These matches are always feisty encounters, and ahead of the game, we’ve decided to work out what starting line-up Mourinho will go with. Trust me, it hasn’t been easy with all the injuries that we’ve suffered recently…
Manchester United’s likely starting XI vs Liverpool:
I’ve gone for an attacking system as I feel that’s the best way to beat Liverpool. They have a frail back line, and it makes sense to try and exploit their biggest weakness.
In goal, David de Gea gets the nod. He’ll have Eric Bailly and Phil Jones in front of him; both of whom have been playing absolutely brilliantly at the start of this season. Antonio Valencia is a shoe-in to start at right-back, with Ashley Young establishing himself as the first-choice left-back at present.
Nemanja Matic will play, fresh off helping his Serbia team reach the World Cup for only the second time in their history. Ander Herrera will start due to injuries to both Marouane Fellaini and Paul Pogba. Juan Mata will sit just in front of these two – in the #10 role.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been quiet recently, but his early season form is enough to give him another chance. Marcus Rashford’s work rate and defensive energy will be key. Romelu Lukaku will be tasked with finding the back of the net once again.
