Ahead of the highly anticipated start of the season, we catch up with Jay Bayford who runs the Arsenal blog, Gunner Pride. He answers a few of our questions, including ones about Fabregas and this years transfer window. Have a read and leave your thoughts in the comment box below.
Both clubs have had a similarly slow start to the transfer market this year, and both so far have stuck to the youth policy. United have signed Guillermo Varela, and Arsenal Yaya Sanogo.
Jordan@ Old Trafford Faithful: Theres only one place to start, what do you make of all these Fabregas to United rumours?
Jay@ Gunner Pride: It’s understandable that United would be interested in him. It’s probably the weakest area of the team and he is an exceptional talent. Am I happy with the rumours. Not one bit.
Jordan: Do you think Arsenal would show an interest if Barca were to sell?
Jay: Absolutely. We have first refusal on him for a reason. Should Barca be willing to sell and Fabregas want to leave then Wenger would definitely join the hunt but I don’t see him going anywhere this summer.
Jordan: If he were to join United, would he still be regarded as a fan favourite?
Jay: All you need to do is look at Robin Van Persie.
Jordan: Good point, ha. What do you make of United’s transfer business?
Jay: Slow. The knockback from Thiago was a blow and I think Moyes is struggling to bring in players who can really make a difference to the team. The good thing for United is he is focusing on the area you need to invest in, attacking midfield.
Of course there is also the Rooney saga which has made the start to his United career incredibly tough. The best thing to do would be to sell Rooney as you don’t want a player at the club who doesn’t want to be there.
Jordan: With money reportedly available, what do you make of Arsenal’s
Jay: Incredibly frustrating. We were linked with Stevan Jovetic, Gonzalo Higuain, Luis Suarez & Marouane Fellaini at the start of the summer but it looks increasingly unlikely that any of those will arrive. Yaya Sanogo will be our only signing and we will struggle again. I do think Wenger will spend but on who and how much is a mystery.
Jordan: Realistically, where do you think Arsenal will finish up in the league?
Jay: It all depends on our summer activity. With our current squad, we would be lucky to make a Europa League spot. Higuain or Suarez’s arrival would probably guarantee top four but we need two-four big signings to challenge for the title. Of course consistency plays a big part. The current team did well at the end of last season because they were consistent.
Jordan: Will that long wait for a trophy be ended this season?
Jay: I’d like to think so but the years have taught me not to get my hopes up. It’s far to early to think that way. Wait until we’re in a final and ask me again :P
Jordan: If you could sign one player who is a realistic target, who would you go for and why?
Jay: Luis Suarez. He comes with a reputation and currently a 6 match suspension but the guy oozes talent. He is a realistic target with Wenger bidding for him and he would improve the squad no end. He would cost a lot of money but talent costs and whatever anyone may think of him, he is a world-class striker.
Jordan: Cheers Jay!
