Athletic Club de Bilbao have this morning have confirmed that they that REJECTED a bid from Manchester United for midfielder, Ander Herrera.
A short statement on the club website read:
Athletic club wishes to announce that this week, we have rejected an offer from Manchester United FC, estimated at €36m, to transfer the federation and economic rights of the player, Ander Herrera
This may come as a bit of a shock, as it is believed that €36m is the buyout clause of the player, although it is probably a technicality, and posturing from Athletic Bilbao.
Athletic Bilbao are notorious for not negotiating in the sale of their players, who all come from the Basque region in Spain. They would much rather have the player/buying club, enforce the buyout clause, which would also save Athletic Bilbao having to pay any fees to Herrera’s former club, Real Zaragoza. These would have to be paid by United.
It is still widely anticipated for the club to sign the player in the coming days.
