Well, there you have it. Ander Herrera will leave Manchester United on a free transfer this summer. Although his destination is currently unknown, Paris Saint-Germain seem to be leading the way.
The 29-year-old midfielder has had ups and downs during his five-year stint at Old Trafford and I’ll never know why he didn’t start more matches under both Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.
At this time, though, it feels to me as though the club and player were some way apart in their valuation of his contract – as that’s the only reason why I see the Basque-born midfielder moving on.
His time at the Theatre of Dreams was summed up perfectly by the classy video United posted on their Twitter page, in which Herrera thanked the fans for their support while admitting the pride he had wearing Red colours for the last half-decade.
Every time he stepped out onto that football field, he gave his all for the badge on his chest and that’s all us fans asked for.
I find it damning that he’s allowed to leave while United are bending over backwards to give contracts to the likes of Phil Jones and Ashley Young, but I guess that’s football.
Wherever he ends up, the team Herrera signs for are getting an excellent player and an even classier person. We will certainly miss him in and around that dressing room.
Thank you and good luck, Ander!
