On the face of it, Manchester United have done pretty well in regards to getting players to commit to new long-term contracts at Old Trafford.
However, there is still much work to be done. Amongst the guys whose deals expire at this season’s end is Ander Herrera. The Basque-born midfielder was in great form before he picked up an injury a month or so ago; and we’ve certainly missed his presence in the middle of the park.
With the campaign now coming to the final stages, it’s logical that the rumours in regards to his future would begin to swirl. Now, the Athletic Club academy produce has had his say on the situation; and it doesn’t make for comfortable reading.
“I knew something would come out. I take it with a pinch of salt, I’m focusing on playing football in the remaining month and a half of the season.
“The rest I leave to my agent, both a possible contract renewal with United and talks with another club about my departure.”
Herrera went on to discuss his brilliant relationship with the fans, too, but first and foremost, it’s important to hear that he’s focused solely on football. As he says everything else will eventually fall into place; be it at United or elsewhere.
Obviously, everyone wants him to stay. He’s a brilliant footballer and United perform far better when he’s on the field.
It does make you wonder, though. You look at the players who have signed new deals, like Phil Jones and Ashley Young, where our top performers, including Herrera and David de Gea seem unwilling to commit.
Right now, this club is still in a mess in regards to the playing squad, and if we’re to fight for multiple honours in future, they have to address this situation or they’ll start to lose their better footballers.
