With Manchester United’s midfield bolstered pretty heavily thanks to Bruno Fernandes. Surely, the writing is on the wall for a player or two? Well, in regards to an Andreas Pereira transfer, it seems as though the Belgian-born-Brazilian is going nowhere…
The story comes from Het Belang van Limburg’s Saturday print edition, translated via Sport Witness. According to their report, the 20-time Premier League champions have told the 24-year-old that a summer exit is ‘absolutely not an option’…
Apparently, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still ‘counts on’ the player, despite the United star struggling for minutes recently. So far, Pereira has played 31 minutes of action over the course of two substitute appearances. He’s missed out on two match-day squads and remained an unused substitute during United’s other two fixtures.
Right now, Pereira has a contract until 2023, with United set to demand ‘a lot of money’ to let the midfielder leave during this summer.
Personally, I’m left scratching my head. I get it, football is a squad game. However, is Pereira really the calibre of player who the Old Trafford club should be counting on?
Without wanting to sound too harsh, I’m still not really sure what he’s good at. He’s bad positionally, a pretty average passer without really having that elite footballing-brain to see the picture being painted. Alright, he’ll score one stunner a season but is that enough? I don’t think so.
At this stage, I don’t see a route into the team for him. Obviously, the current midfield trio picks itself. Both Fred and Scott McTominay are certainly ahead in the pecking order, too. Plus, if a move for Jack Grealish or a player of similar style happens, Pereira could struggle to start in cup matches!
