Manchester United Football Club have had their fair share of flop signings since Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford. Perhaps the worst of the bunch? Angel di Maria.
At the time, the Argentina international was bought for a club record transfer fee. Despite a promising start, the speedy winger fast became more of a burden than a help, due to sub-par performances and a poor attitude.
He was sold after just one season at the Theatre of Dreams. Now, he has finally spoken out about his time in Manchester; as his new Paris Saint-Germain side are gearing up to take on the Red Devils in the Champions League.
It’s fair to say he didn’t have too many kind words to dish out towards a certain Louis van Gaal…
“I only stayed one year, it was not the best time of my career, or rather I was not allowed to spend my best time.” Di Maria told France Bleu.
“There were complications with the coach of the time. But thank God, I was able to come to PSG and demonstrate again who I was.”
At the end of the day, despite the first month, it always felt like Di Maria wasn’t really playing for the badge, or interested in playing in England whatsoever.
It was such a huge relief when he was sold that summer and Van Gaal definitely made the right decision on that one. That’s not to say he isn’t a brilliant player on his day, he absolutely is. Sometimes, it just doesn’t work out in certain situations and that was one of those times.
