Manchester United paid a British record fee of £59.7million to bring Angel Di Maria to Old Trafford in the summer, and the Argentine has certainly lit up Old Trafford with some scintillating pieces of play in his two months at the club. Di Maria won the Champions League with Real last season, putting in a Man of the Match performance in the final.
The 26-year old more than deserves his nomination for the award as he arguably outshone Cristiano Ronaldo at times last season, and the decision to sell him to Manchester United must be one that is still baffling Real Madrid fans almost a third of the way into the new season.
He’ll go ups gainst the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Arjen Robben and others, so the chances of him winning the individual award are pretty slim. It would be nice to see him make the final shortlist though.
The most notable absentee from the list was Luis Suarez, who probably missed out purely due to the fact that he missed three months of football whilst serving his ban.
The 23-man shortlist will eventually be whittled down to three, before the winner is crowned in January.
