Manchester United Football Club made a strong start to life in the 2017/18 season, thanks to a convincing 4-0 victory at home to West Ham United. Although this is just the beginning, it literally couldn’t have gone any better and it bodes well for the season.
As we all know, 2016/17 was slightly underwhelming in terms of the Premier League. Big things were expected but eventually, the Red Devils finished the season in sixth place; thankfully, that was salvaged by the fact that Mourinho masterminded his team to an EFL and Europa League cup double.
However, it looks as though the dressing room has their eyes firmly on winning more silverware this term – that’s if Anthony Martial’s latest words are anything to go by anyway.
Whilst speaking to the media, he has sent a strong message to the fans of United and other clubs – as he plans to continue building upon what is already a stacked Theatre of Dreams trophy cabinet, whilst also discussing his personal aims.
“As a squad, we haven’t really talked about specific aims for the season too much so far, but the goal is to win as many titles as possible,” said Martial, to Manchester United’s official magazine.
“That is what we tried to do last year and it’s what we are going to try to do this year. Personally, my main goal is to win titles and medals, of course. I also want to play the most. I have always wanted to play since I was young and so now I’ve got to do my best to win the title. I do set myself targets for appearances and goals but I keep that to myself.”
“Everybody in the league has been reinforcing, buying players, so it is going to be ever better and much more exciting for everyone – both for us and for those watching the Premier League,”
“We also have the Champions League to look forward to again and I think that is a competition that every team wants to win. It is a difficult competition and you have to work hard from the beginning to the end. We will see how it goes. Anything is possible.
“But the main aim is the Premier League title. That is what we want. When you play football you’re playing to win, not to be second or third. So we’re going to do everything we can to achieve this.”
I think the one that every United fan wants is the Premier League. After making some brilliant signings over the summer, it feels as though we have the potential to be as close as we’ve ever been post-Sir Alex Ferguson.
Martial is a key part of that, although he couldn’t get in the starting line-up on the opening day. That didn’t stop the Frenchman having a real impact, though, as he scored and also grabbed an assist before the 90 minutes were up.
Fair play to him for grabbing his opportunity with both hands and I really expect him to kick on from here. Let’s not forget, this is all amid talks about a potential move away from United, but I’d be very surprised if Manchester United let him leave.
