Manchester United signed one of the brightest talents in world football just two summers ago, when Louis van Gaal made a big-money move to bring in Anthony Martial. The brilliant Frenchman had a wonderful debut season at the Theatre of Dreams, but he regressed somewhat under Jose Mourinho.
It became clear that the Portuguese boss preferred to utilise Marcus Rashford instead of Martial for one reason or another, although the Frenchman did work his way back into proceedings as the season approached it’s climax.
That didn’t stop reports linking Martial with a move away from Old Trafford however.
Now, his agent, Philippe Lamboley, has had his say on the situation and confirmed the news that we were all waiting to hear; Martial plans to stay at Manchester United Football Club, and he would only leave if the club didn’t want him.
“Martial has two years left and there is no reason for him to leave Manchester today.” He is quoted as saying by Journal du Dimanche, as per Sky Sports News.
“If [executive vice-chairman] Ed Woodward tells me they want him to leave, things are different.”
“But that is not what he told me during our last meeting.”
The 21-year-old is still one of the most gifted individuals on our books and he still has plenty to offer Mourinho and this side. At times, we lacked that cutting edge and clinical finishing, and if Martial is given a regular run in the side (either at left-wing or striker), I think that could change.
He’s a wonderful footballer with the world at his feet. If he were to get frozen out of things next season then I’d be worried, but as of right now, I fully expect him to prove the manager wrong over the next twelve months.
The main concern is that if Mourinho does sign another forward to try and replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s goals, he could find opportunities limited. When he gets that all-important chance, Martial has to be ready.
