Antonio Valencia joins LDU Quito after leaving Man United

We’ve known for a while that Antonio Valencia would be leaving Manchester United during this transfer window. Now, we know his next club.

There was a rumour claiming that he’d been offered the chance to stay in the Premier League – well that didn’t turn out to be true.

Instead, the 33-year-old out-of-contract star is heading back to his homeland of Ecuador, after sealing a deal with LDU Quito, with the club posting a welcome video on their social media last night.

To me, it always felt like he’d head to the MLS or back to South America as his career winds down, and where better than his country of birth where he can be close to his family and friends?

His new side currently sit seventh in the table, but the season doesn’t end until November so there’s time aplenty for Quito to begin their climb up the league.

Valencia has been a brilliant servant for Manchester United. His effort, work-rate, tenacity and desire to win made him a key cog in Sir Alex Ferguson’s winning machine for a prolonged period of time. Without doubt, his presence in and around the dressing room will be missed.

With that said, you do feel as though the time was right for him to move on. Injuries haven’t helped him over the last few seasons, but the performance levels have certainly dipped. No doubt he’ll be an absolute star back in Ecuador.

Good luck, Antonio!
