Arsenal leading chase to sign Man United defender Chris Smalling: report

Over the summer, Manchester United took the decision to start heading in a different direction. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer began the clearout, with several names leaving Old Trafford for pastures new.

Amongst those was Chris Smalling, who made the move to AS Roma, albeit only on loan. The English centre-half has been in sublime form over in the Serie A as his stock continues to trend upwards once more.

For United, they now have a huge decision to make. Do they bring Smalling back into the first-team fold next term? Or move him on for good?

Well, if their choice is the latter, Smalling isn’t going to be short on options. According to the Daily Mirror, Arsenal are currently leading the chase to sign the 30-year-old United star next summer, though several Premier League clubs are keen.

Amongst those, are Everton and Leicester while AS Roma (obviously), Inter Milan and Juventus have also been impressed.

I’ve always been strong in the belief that United would have been by far better off by keeping Smalling in Manchester and letting Phil Jones leave. Although both have had their poor spells, Smalling has been far more consistent since his arrival from Fulham almost ten years ago now.

Personally, I’d love to see Smalling come back to Salford Quays with a point to prove next summer. As a third or fourth-choice option, the 20-time Premier League champions could certainly do worse…
