Arsene Wenger explains why he didn’t make move for Anthony Martial

Manchester United made a huge move on transfer deadline day, securing the signature of Anthony Martial from AS Monaco. Louis van Gaal goes head-to-head with Arsenal this weekend, and the man at the helm is the king of scouting young French talent, Arsene Wenger.

The man himself has had his say on the young 19-year old striker, and admitted that he didn’t make an approach for Martial as AS Monaco didn’t want to sell their star man.

Wenger said: “Martial was one of the players Monaco didn’t want to sell, so we never made any approach. United offered special money.”

This is a fair comment from Mr Wenger. £38million was a fee that was immediately criticised for a relative unknown from the French league. However thus far Martial has certainly silenced his doubters. He scored a fantastic solo goal on debut, then added two cool finishes to secure all three points away at Southampton.

As you’d expect, Wenger knows all there is to know about the French starlets of the world, and this one was no exception.
