Ashley Young has been somewhat the forgotten man this season so far, with the winger only making two first-team appearances back in August, he was then ruled out through injury for the next two months. However, this morning, Sir Alex revealed that Ashley is back fit and will be in the squad to face Stoke City tomorrow.
This means that our injury problems seem to be easing up, with centre-half still the problem area as Vidic, Smalling and Jones are still unavailable.
In his weekly presser, Sir Alex said: “Everyone came back from the internationals fit, which is a bonus. It is always a time when you’re a bit concerned about getting the players back but, fortunately, we’ve been lucky this time. Also Ashley Young is fit. Chris Smalling is not quite there but is making progress.
With Nani nor Valencia being in the best form, Ashley Young could well find himself with a lot of playing time if he performs up to the level we know he can, and with all our attacking options now fit and ready to go, one area where you’d fancy us to do well this season is goalscoring.
Sir Alex was then asked whether Ashley Young had been ‘forgotten’, his reply was: “I wouldn’t say Young has been forgotten,” he continued “It’s always the same when a player gets injured, he’s not there so they can be out of people’s minds. Young has shown his qualities.
For me, Ashley Young got some bad press from the media and fans alike last season, he scored 11 goals from the wide position last season, and some of those included vital goals in our bid to win the league. Let’s just hope he can regain full fitness quickly and help us try and wrestle our league title back!
