Back on April 3rd, we covered a story from Spanish media outlet Sport in which it was claimed that Manchester United had contacted Samuel Umtiti’s entourage about the potential signing.
Well a month or so later and Sport are back at it again. This time, they’re covering things from FC Barcelona’s end, as they claim that they’ve lowered their valuation of the reported 26-year-old United transfer target.
Apparently, they believe Umtiti is worth just £27million, with the Reds facing competition from Arsenal for the Frenchman’s signature.
It wasn’t too long ago when Umtiti was considered amongst the most promising young defenders in world football, though injuries have been a real problem for the former Lyon centre-half.
The talent is obviously still there, though availability is just as important – if not even more so, hence why the fee has been considerably lowered.
Defensively, it seems as though United are still on the hunt to bring in another body. However, I’m not sure Umtiti is the right man. After all, do the Old Trafford club really want to add another injury-prone defender to a group containing Phil Jones and Eric Bailly? It just doesn’t seem like the smartest option at this point in time…
