Bastian Schweinsteiger explains why he gave Man Utd captaincy to De Gea

Manchester United played Ipswich midweek, with Louis van Gaal opting for a full strength side as he looked to avoid the horror show against the MK Dons which took place the last time we played in the competition.

Thankfully that didn’t happen and we won the game convincingly, however midway through the second half there was somewhat of a dilemma on Bastian Schweinsteiger’s hands as no other senior players were on the pitch.

He didn’t know who to give the captains armband to, and in the end he opted for De Gea.

“I didn’t know who is the next captain so I looked at Blind and he said De Gea so I gave the captain’s armband to him.” Schweinsteiger said. “I was looking for a player who has played more games than me here for Manchester. I don’t know why but I gave it to De Gea”

De Gea is a great choice of captain. He’s a real leader both on and off the field and without question he deserved the chance. Personally I’d like to see him given the armband of a full-time basis, but that won’t happen whilst Wayne Rooney is still at the club.
