Manchester United Football Club had been in good shape before last night. A 2-2 draw at home to Southampton was compounded by both a Brandon Williams and Luke Shaw injury concern, though…
A last-minute goal conceded really hurt our top-four bid in this one, while we have every right to feel unlucky. Oriol Romeu should have seen red in the first half, while finishing the game with ten men due to a Williams injury only helped Southampton.
Williams himself was an enforced change due to Luke Shaw, who seemingly rolled his ankle. Yes, that’s right, both United’s regular left-back are now out.
Anyway after the game, the double injury blow was confirmed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Reds are now sweating on the fitness of the pair, particularly as there’s only a three-day turnaround in between Thursday’s trip to Palace.
“Luke twisted his ankle,” said Solskjaer per ManUtd.com. “Hopefully, we can have some good news on him after we’ve done a scan.”
“In a separate interview with the in-house channel, Solskjaer stated: “I can’t say [really], I’ve not seen Brandon because he was with the medical staff and I think he was getting some stitches with a gash over his eye.
“So let’s see how he is.”
A twisted ankle seems pretty serious. I guess it all depends on the severity, but the fact he’s having a scan greatly concerns me. I’d be highly surprised if we see Shaw take to the field again this season, let alone Thursday.
As for Williams, his was a nasty head collision which did result in a lot of blood pouring out of the young man’s head. Concussions aren’t to be messed with and I’d be extremely surprised if the left-back doesn’t have one. Those Harpurhey boys are made of some tough stuff, but I doubt he’ll be fit to go on Thursday.
The obvious solution for Solskjaer is to hand Diogo Dalot the start at left-back. You also have Ethan Laird as an option, but is Palace away really the best place to make your full Premier League debut? Probably not.
