Following the end of the 2014/15 season today, Manchester United have confirmed that Radamel Falcao will return to AS Monaco after an unsuccessful loan spell with the club.
Falcao, who signed a 12 month loan deal on Deadline day last summer, made 29 appearances in total, but only found the net 4 times. The Columbian striker had been out for a long time with a serious knee injury and never quite got settled into life at the club.
Manchester United did have an option to make the deal permanent, but on reflection, the £42.5million transfer fee that had been pre-arranged was too sizable for the club to gamble on another unproductive season.
Manager, Louis van Gaal, has had this to say about Falcao:
Falcao is a top professional and a good human being. On behalf of myself and everyone at the club I would like to wish him well for the future
Its a desperate shame it hasn’t worked out. Falcao became an instant fan favourite and created a genuine buzz when he first signed. But sadly Falcao couldnt reacreate the devastating for that he had during his spells at FC Porto, Atletico Madrid and AS Monaco. We wish him the best
