After securing Tahith Chong’s Manchester United future with a new deal earlier this week, the logical next step would be to try and come to some sort of arrangement with Angel Gomes.

The Englishman, 19, has a deal that expires this summer, while the club have offered Gomes a contract worth £25,000-a-week to remain at Old Trafford.

According to The Metro, Premier League giant Chelsea are trying to sign Gomes on a free transfer this summer, as the attacking midfielder and his representatives were ‘unimpressed’ by United’s terms.

United are understandably ‘desperate’ to keep ahold of Gomes, but there’s a suggestion of growing impatience from the playmaker’s reps. Furthermore, United feel that Gomes’ slight frame always meant that his progress was going to be slower – which does make sense. After all, Gomes is 5’3. Competing at the highest level, when you’re that small, is a pretty big ask.

I understand all parties. Gomes wants to be playing while United don’t think he’s ready. The ball is firmly in the court of the player right now and Chelsea are trying to pounce.

Honestly, though, would Gomes really be expected to make starts with regularity at Stamford Bridge? They’re even less willing to play young players than we are (that has only changed this season due to the stadium ban). Inevitably, Gomes would probably end up at Vitesse on loan next term if he made the move to London…
