Chong decides not to renew Man United contract, can leave for free in summer: report

Manchester United are world-renowned for giving young players their first-team opportunities. That’s a mantra Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen on sticking with.

Amongst the several talented teenagers who impressed on pre-season tour was Tahith Chong. As expected, the fluffy-haired Dutchman would be given ample chances to shine when the serious stuff started. However, it’s fair to say he was average in those displays…

We haven’t seen Chong since the 1-0 loss to Newcastle United back in early October, and it seems as though his frustrations are growing…

The story comes from Calciomercato, translated by Sport Witness, who state that the United starlet has decided not to renew his Reds contract; allowing Chong to walk away for free in the summer of 2020.

Furthermore, Juventus are keen on adding the 19-year-old, in an eerily familiar Paul Pogba-esque deal…

In an ideal world, United could send Chong out on loan and allow him to build up his game that way, however, it seems as though the Dutchman has already made his mind up – and I guess the only way that would change if he’s handed first-team minutes with regularity.

For me, if Chong wants to leave, let him. He’s a talented young man but so far we haven’t seen that. Sure, he could go on to prove us all wrong but that’s the gamble you take, and United shouldn’t be held to ransom by a kid with a handful of first-team appearances under his belt.

This is something United have to be careful with, though. Angel Gomes is in exactly the same situation, so don’t be surprised to hear something similar leaked from his camp in the not too distant future.
