Manchester United have certainly had an up and down season, but there have been a few players who have constantly played excellent. One man who has done superbly is Chris Smalling, and recently, he has been compared to one of the clubs best centre-backs; Rio Ferdinand.
When asked about the comparisons to Ferdinand, Smalling replied:
“It is nice to be compared to great players but everyone has their own traits. But if you are being compared to players like that then you must be doing something well and I hope I can keep that going.”
What a turnaround it has been over the last eighteen months for Chris Smalling. He went from the derby day pantomime villain to the hero of the back four in a short space of time. These comparisons just sum up how far he has come.
Its remarkable to think how good he has become defensively, and how assured he now is. The 26-year old is one of the key players for Manchester United at the moment, and he certainly should be in contention for the club Player of the Year award come the end of the season.
