Manchester United and Louis van Gaal deserve plenty of credit for their willingness to persist with youth this season, albeit down to injuries or not. The likes of Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Guillermo Varela and Tim Fosu-Mensah have all done brilliantly at times, but two others stand out.
Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have been forming an excellent bond on the football field over the last few months, and their pace, trickery and intelligence on the ball quite simply causes havoc.
After the FA Cup semi-final victory, Chris Smalling has heaped the praise on the young pair, by stating that Everton were ‘scared’ of United’s star duo.
“Now, I think the world’s their oyster if they can stay fit and keep playing together,” Smalling is quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News.
“I think you can see the Everton defenders were really scared to get tight with them, because they’ve got that ability in behind them and it’s great to have that attacking edge to our game.”
Its testament to have far the duo have come over the last few months. Anthony Martial was relatively unknown when he came to Manchester but that isn’t the case any more, and Marcus Rashford has been an inspiration since bursting onto the scene. Long may it continue.
