Classy defender rejects Man United due to club’s fall from grace: report

We’re not even close to the opening of the transfer window, and already, Manchester United are getting turned down by players.

I suspect this’ll be a recurring theme over the next few months, particularly due to the lack of Champions League football on offer.

According to the Daily Star in an exclusive, it is being claimed that the classy defender, Matthijs de Ligt, has turned down United as they are no longer the club they once were. Apparently, the rejection took place even before the Red Devils’ faint Champions League qualification hopes had ended.

The article goes on to add that De Ligt, who is just 19, prefers a move to either FC Barcelona or Real Madrid – which makes sense given they’re the two powerhouses in football at this point in time.

Honestly, I’m not surprised. De Ligt has ambitions to become the best in the business. Would he rather play with Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos or Phil Jones? It’s a no-brainer.

We have to get used to the fact that United is no longer a desirable club for players who’re on the move. Instead, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to be astute in the transfer market, moving for hidden gems and those under the radar players. In the long-run that could certainly help out as we’d no longer be buying mercenaries, but rather we’d have players who actually want to be here.

Buckle up, folks, it’s going to be a long, windy, bumpy road full of rejections. This is no doubt the first of many.
