As expected, Sir Alex has named a strong starting line-up in the hope that United can confirm their place in the last 16. Chris Smalling makes his return to the starting XI at the heart of the defence, with Ferdinand dropping to the bench.

Sir Alex has also decided to rest Brazilian right-back Rafael, replacing him with Antonio Valencia dropping back.  It looks like a standard 4-4-2 formation with Welbeck on the left and Nani on his favoured right side, Robin van Persie is also rested as Javier Hernandez partners Wayne Rooney up front.

Starting XI

De Gea, Valencia, Smalling, Evans, Evra, Nani, Anderson, Giggs, Welbeck, Rooney, Hernandez

Subs:  Lindegaard, Rafael, Ferdinand, Carrick, Young, Cleverley, Van Persie
