The highly respected Guardian journalist, Daniel Taylor, claims that Cristiano Ronaldo has told Manchester United he is keen on a sensational return to Old Trafford. The deal will not happen this season although United did explore the possibility, but could happen in next summers transfer window.
Manchester United have been closely monitoring Ronaldo’s situation for the last year, and although no formal offer has been made, it has become clear Ronaldo wants to come back to Manchester one day.
The 28-year old forward has two years left on his Real Madrid deal, and he’ll be into his final twelve months of that next summer. Meaning Real will either have to cash in on him and cut their losses, or let him go on a free the year after. Ronaldo isn’t getting any younger though, and by the time United may finally get him back, Ronaldo will be approaching 30.
Who wouldn’t want him back though? In his six years at United he lit up the Premier League, winning the lot. Three Premier League’s, an FA Cup, Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup crowns. He hasn’t won anywhere near enough that at Real Madrid despite his incredible goalscoring record.
Also why would he want to move away from the club he loves so much? Maybe he doesn’t like consistently being in Lionel Messi’s shadow. Surely his ego will take an even bigger hit when Gareth Bale finally seals a move to the Bernabeu, breaking Ronaldo’s world record transfer fee.
You’d worry about United’s finances, too. The Glazers have certainly limited our spending since taking over, and sanctioning a deal to bring Ronaldo back certainly won’t be cheap. He’d probably cost at least £35-40m even if he is in the last year of his contract, and he’d want pretty hefty wages on top of that too.
You’d still have your doubts about a possible deal going through, but how good would it be if Ronnie did come home? For now we can only hope…
