Go back to 2011, and the legend that was Edwin van der Sar had just retired from the beautiful game. Up stepped a young 21-year old keeper who goes by the name of David de Gea. At first, ‘big Dave’ struggled with the physicality of the Premier League – things have changed massively since then.
Now 23, David de Gea is one of the best shot-stoppers in world football, and he finished last season as Manchester United’s Player of the Season, an accolade he completely deserved.
Whilst speaking to AS, David de Gea told of his tears as he found out he’d be joining Manchester United, but it was clearly a mixture of sadness and pride. He spent all his life at Atletico, and leaving his home was always going to be tough.
“Yes [I cried]. I had spent the whole of my life at one club and it was difficult for me to leave,” De Gea told AS.
“But joining Manchester United was a step I had to take, and I know I made the right decision.”
David de Gea still has an awful lot of developing to do, and my biggest worry is that once he’s the complete player, one of Spain’s big teams come in for him and prise him away from us.
Hopefully David will get his chance on the biggest stage of all in the World Cup tonight.
