Over eighteen months ago now, it looked as though David de Gea was just inches away from moving to Real Madrid. The Spaniard was embroiled in some sort of transfer saga that involved a dodgy fax machine – which infamously came to Manchester United’s aid.
Since then, the #1 has put pen to paper on a new contract at the Theatre of Dreams, but the reports linking him with a move to Madrid were always going to resurface.
Now, The Sun say that David de Gea and Thibaut Courtois are ‘locked in a duel’ to be Real Madrid’s new number one goalkeeper. The report says that both former Atletico goalkeepers are tempted by the opportunity of a return to the Spanish capital, which would see either of them replace Keylor Navas as the starting goalkeeper.
At the end of the day, these rumours were always going to come about at some point, it’s just natural given the way things have panned out since the aforementioned saga.
Obviously, I’d much prefer Thibaut Courtois to move back to Spain, allowing us to keep hold of David de Gea. It seems to me that our goalie is happy right now, and I’d highly doubt he’d force the issue, but this is football and I guess you never know…
