After pursuing the Everton left-back pretty much all summer, David Moyes has admitted that any potential deal for his former player Leighton Baines, is over. Manchester United left the Marouane Fellaini deal right up until the last minute to try and get Baines included in the deal, but failed to do so due to Everton’s asking price.
In his press conference today, Moyes was asked about Baines, and whether he felt he overpaid for Fellaini. He responded:
“No, because we chose to do it the way we did. We wanted to keep the chance with Leighton Baines until the last minute. Only at the last minute did we split the deal. That was the way we decided to do it.”
Although Baines will be praised for not pushing a move to Manchester United through, you feel this year was his big chance to earn a move to a top side. Now at 28, any potential move to a Champions League club is probably over for the lad from Kirkby.
Whilst its reassuring to hear that we overpaid for Fellaini in the hope of getting Baines too, its also disappointing nobody else came in this summer.
