Cast your mind back to last summer, and the final day of the transfer window. Manchester United looked set to seal a deal for Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera, only for the deal to be called off at the final minute. That interest could be rekindled this summer according to the Daily Mail, as United look to bolster their midfield options before the start of next season.
United offered £32m for Herrera last summer, but pulled out of the deal due to fees rising to around £37m, which United weren’t willing to pay. If you believe reports, Athletic Bilbao aren’t prepared to let their man man go for anything less than the £37m that they wanted last season.
Herrera has been in excellent form recently, playing in a more advanced role than he’s used to, and there has even been talk that suggests a spot on the plane to Rio with the Spanish squad could be around the corner if he keeps putting in the performances.
United have been linked with a whole host of midfielders all year long, but there aren’t that many realistic targets out there. A deal for William Carvalho looks all-but done, whereas Ilkay Gundogan and Toni Kroos look destined to stay at their current clubs for at least another season.
