Dean Henderson number one? The Manchester United fans certainly think so. We’ve done this dance before, but this time, the campaign for the young Englishman is bearing even more weight.
Back in 2019, United fans boldly stated that an emerging Henderson should be United’s numero uno. Six months have passed since then. Henderson has only further improved. David de Gea, unfortunately, continues to get worse.
Last night, two De Gea howlers gifted Chelsea with a spot in the FA Cup final. These errors, which were once few and far between, are now happening with regularity.
Goalkeeping is won and lost in the mind. De Gea’s losing his fight right now, while Henderson’s confidence continues to sky-rocket. Sure, it’s not going to be easy to replace arguably the best goalkeeper of the decade, but it feels like the opportune moment.
Who’s the better goalie?
Henderson has command of his penalty area, De Gea does not. Henderson will come and claim crosses, De Gea won’t. Henderson will distribute the ball with relative accuracy. I’ve long argued that’s the worst part of De Gea’s game.
Sure, there are elements, shot-stopping for one, in which De Gea is better at. The Spaniard is at, or past his peak at this point in time. Henderson’s only going to get better.
I get it, it’s easier for us to say that Henderson is ready. Only our manager knows, though. Be careful moving off someone like De Gea, too, who has been a fantastic servant for this club.
Last night felt like the final straw, with the fans again calling for the 23-year-old Henderson to be named first-choice next season. I’m firmly in that camp and I have been for a while. The question is, will Ole Gunnar Solskjaer take that risk?
