Manchester United Football Club struggled in the transfer window, as Jose Mourinho tried to bolster his squad.
Perhaps the biggest need was a new centre-half. However, despite chasing defenders all summer, Edward Woodward came up empty-handed. From Diego Godin on deadline day, to rumours suggesting Harry Maguire was Old Trafford-bound, nothing happened, it was a quiet summer.
A week or so ago, the Red Devils were rumoured to be interested in the ex-Wigan man, Andreas Granqvist. Now, it looks as though it could have been correct, with the 33-year-old confirming that United are chasing him – before adding that if a respectable offer comes his way in January, he’d take it.
“There is indeed interest. I am honoured that I am linked with such a big club,” Granqvist told Expressen, translated by the Daily Mirror.
“If there is a concrete offer in January, then both the club and I will accept that, but that is currently not the case.”.
Sometimes, I wonder if United are just trying to sign someone for the sake of it. At 33, Granqvist would be the shortest of short-term replacements. I’d much prefer to see someone in the 27-29 age range signed, as at the very least, you’d get four or five top-level seasons from them.
Granqvist has only played a handful of games in English football, who knows how he’d cope with the speed, tenacity and pace during the latter years of his career?
I guess the one positive is the fact that he has played alongside Victor Lindelof at the back for their country, they did pretty well during the World Cup. If they can rediscover that form, then who knows, it could be a shrewd move, but I still have my doubts.
