Manchester United are now the favourites to sign Nemanja Matic from Chelsea, according to the usually reliable Italian journalist, Gianluca Di Marzio. In his column, he writes that previous favourites Juventus have now turned their attentions elsewhere – towards the direction of Blaise Matuidi.
That, obviously, leaves the Red Devils in pole position to acquire the Serbian powerhouse from Chelsea this summer.
At first, I was underwhelmed at the thought of signing Matic, but when you sit down and think about it, you can certainly see the logic.
Over the last few years, we’ve looked lost when it comes to the holding midfielder role. Outside of Michael Carrick, our back four has had next to no protection from the defensive-minded centre-mid, and bringing in Matic would drastically change that for the better.
He’s a player who’s in his late twenties and would bring that experience to the table. On top of that, he’s a winner who already has scooped a couple of Premier League titles, and Mourinho knows him well from their time together at Chelsea.
It definitely looks like the former SL Benfica man will be on the move this summer, particularly as he was completely left out of Chelsea’s tour squad, which seems odd considering his importance to the club over the last two years.
