Manchester United’s Champions League opener is in the books. Jose Mourinho’s men won 3-0 away at Young Boys, making it three wins on the trot.
The game saw Diogo Dalot earn his full Red Devils debut, and within a minute it was easy to see why Mourinho had put faith in the 19-year-old. His crossing ability, pace, power and defensive awareness was evident from the first minute.
Sure, tougher tests are still to come, but in terms of a start, this was almost perfect. Shortly after the win, Dalot took to Twitter to express his delight at making his first appearance.

The young man brought fresh ideas to an area in which we’ve become accustomed to seeing make-shift full-backs start in. It was excellent to see a natural right-sided player in the team, and the difference has already become clear.
Going forward, it gives Mourinho another option in such a vital area of the pitch. Antonio Valencia isn’t getting any younger at 33, I wouldn’t be surprised if the man from Ecuador was displaced within the team before the current campaign ends.
For now, though, Dalot has to keep working hard and patiently await his opportunity. I’m now looking forward to seeing him in action when United host Derby County in the Carabao Cup next Tuesday.
