Manchester United Football Club have confirmed that Sam Johnstone has left Old Trafford permanently.
The 25-year-old goalkeeper will join West Bromwich Albion in the Championship, likely to replace ex-Red, Ben Foster in between the sticks.
Johnstone has been a huge beneficiary of the loan system over the last twelve months, as he headed off to Aston Villa, where he played week-in-week-out football to massively develop his game.
However, upon return to the club, he was always going to find it hard to break into United’s squad; with the likes of David de Gea, Sergio Romero and now Lee Grant ahead of him.
He’s reached that stage in his career where regular football is an absolute must. He can no longer afford to be an onlooker from the substitutes bench, whereas another loan move wouldn’t really do anything for him either.
At least now he knows where his future lies and Johnstone will be able to settle down in the Midlands. It is a shame to see him move on, particularly after watching him develop and grow here, but it is the right decision for all the involved parties.
All the best, Sam!
