Despite Manchester United taking on Valencia CF at Old Trafford last night, Executive Vice-Chairman Edward Woodward wasn’t present. It seemed he had more pressing matters to deal with, as he was in attendance at the UEFA Super Cup, as Real Madrid and Sevilla went head-to-head.
According to the Daily Mail, Edward Woodward was at the game watching Angel di Maria, and apparently talks between United and Real Madrid were held afterwards. The winger was expected to join Paris Saint-Germain, but the French Champions pulled out of the deal because they found that Di Maria was ‘too expensive’.
At 26, Angel di Maria is approaching his peak after having his best season in Madrid last year. However Madrid’s reason for selling is the arrival of James Rodriguez after a superb World Cup. The £50million fee does sound steep, but for a player of his calibre in the modern day era its probably about right.
Manchester United have gone on about how much money they have available all summer long, but are yet to put their money where their mouth is. Hopefully Di Maria will be the huge marquee signing we’ve all been expecting.
