For all of the stick that Edward Woodward got in his first transfer window as Manchester United’s main man, the businessman has gotten a lot of things right since. He secured every single one of Jose Mourinho’s main transfer target last summer and has gone a long way into redeeming himself.
Now the United Vice Chairman has gone one better in the wake of those horrifying attacks that took place in Manchester last Monday. In his column, John Cross of the Daily Star has shared a classy gesture that Woodward made to him personally.
It was discovered that Cross’ family member was indeed at that concert at the Manchester Arena; his 11-year-old daughter. He writes that Woodward reached out to him immediately, by offering help in the way of counselling, as well as telling the journalist that he could fly back to Manchester on the team’s private jet; so that he could return home quicker.
This is just brilliant. Often, businessmen like these look like nothing more than mere robots when in the public eye, but this touching gesture says an awful lot about the man rather than the employee.
At the end of the day, we’re all human here and that incident affected so many lives. He’s an absolute credit to his football club, and I hope that some cut him some slack that he so rightly deserves.
