Manchester United’s Eric Bailly picked up an innocuous-looking knee injury during the 4-0 thumping at the hands of Chelsea over the weekend, with Jose Mourinho sounding very unhappy indicating it could be a long-term issue for a man who has definitely been our best defender.
Now the 22-year-old has given us an update on his situation and put an initial timetable on when we can expect him to return. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem as bad as first thought on paper, but Manchester United will be without his services for a considerable amount of time.
Bailly hopes to be back in action within about two months time – which is convenient for his national side as that is just before the African Cup of Nations will get underway.
Sadly, that means we’re quite unlikely to have him back on the team sheet until after that competition ends, which is around mid-February.
That gives Jose Mourinho a real issue going forward. Phil Jones is constantly injured, Chris Smalling is going through a real bad patch of form right now and Daley Blind just isn’t a natural centre-back. The only other option we have is Timothy Fosu-Mensah – who is largely untested despite his huge talent.
