Manchester United Football Club has always had a knack for harnessing and developing the superstars of tomorrow. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has continued with that mantra wonderfully-well.
Debuts aplenty have been given by the Baby Faced Assassin since he took charge in December 2018. Amongst those who earned their first opportunity is young defender, Ethan Laird.
Today, the budding full-back signed a new deal with United, keeping him at the club until 2023. The Reds confirmed the news via the official website earlier today.
Upon signing the contract, the 18-year-old United starlet posed all-smiles, committing his long-term future to Old Trafford:
Going forward, I don’t doubt that Laird will make it at the highest level. What plays in his favour is versatility. He was used as a right-back during his senior debut against FC Astana in the Europa League, but I’d argue that his best position is over on the left.
He’s young so Laird does have time to either commit to one position or become a jack of all trades and keep both flanks open. For now, it makes sense to keep working on both as after all, he’s not entirely sure where his first-team opportunity will come.
For United, it’s peace of mind. Laird’s future for the next three seasons is now secure. Perhaps we could see the young man head out on loan next season, hopefully after he takes part in our pre-season tour preparations.
Either way, the world is his oyster and I seriously hope we see him take to the field for us before the season’s end.
