Manchester United are seemingly closing in on their first summer signing; and it came from absolutely nowhere.
Now, Portuguese media outlet A Bola, translated wonderfully by Sport Witness, state that Diogo Dalot will have his Red Devils medical over the next few days; before signing a five-year contract at Old Trafford.
Finally, an announcement should be made ‘soon’ with the 19-year-old full-back to become Jose Mourinho’s first major coup in an absolutely vital transfer window.
It’s been clear for quite some time that United need at least one new full-back. Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia are great, but they aren’t getting any younger. Then you have Luke Shaw, who the manager just doesn’t trust whatsoever.
Dalot is young and inexperienced at the highest level; having only played a handful of games for Porto’s senior side. Most of his appearances have come for Porto B, but he was excellent against Liverpool in the Champions League knockout round; helping his side to a 0-0 draw at Anfield.
I wouldn’t be expecting Dalot to come in and play week-in-week-out every day. Instead, I’d imagine he’ll sit in-behind the aforementioned Valencia and Young while learning for a year. Either that, or don’t be surprised to head out on loan.
