Gary Neville hints that Manchester United icon should retire

Manchester United Football Club have been on a pretty decent run of form in the Premier League recently, despite the fact that they’ve only just moved up from sixth in the table. Jose Mourinho definitely has the Red Devils moving in the right direction, but one key man has largely been on the periphery.

The guy in question is Wayne Rooney. Now approaching the latter stages of his career, the man from Croxteth has been in and out of the team this year – and has only scored two league goals which has to be a worry.

His all-round performances haven’t been anywhere near the levels that you’d expect from a player of his calibre, and quite frankly, his demise has been pretty sad to watch.

In my opinion, Jose Mourinho must seriously be questioning the United and England captain behind the scenes, and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see him shifted on when the summer transfer window opens.

Now one of his former teammates Gary Neville has hinted that the forward should retire, so everyone remembers the good rather than the bad.

“He is going through a period of his career where obviously the performances and appearances aren’t the same as they were.” Gary Neville is quoted as saying by The Sun.

“All he needs to do is retire and all of a sudden everybody would remember the greatness of him.”

“We are seeing it with [Arsene] Wenger, Rooney, Steven Gerrard, you see this approach towards them and then they retire and people respect and enjoy what they’ve seen for the last 15 years.”

“He deserves a tremendous amount of credit for what he’s achieved in terms of club and country appearances, goals, commitment and leadership.”

“He is just going through a natural period that most players do.”

It must be something that Rooney himself is considering – he has to be. He clearly has plenty of money in the bank so that cannot be a concern, and he may as well go out on a high – playing for the biggest club side in world football.

With that said, I think that the Manchester United fans will always remember his career as an excellent one. This is a player that has won absolutely everything in the game whilst at the Theatre of Dreams, and he more than deserves all the plaudits coming his way.
