Gary Neville: Mason Greenwood can be ‘anything he wants to be’

Manchester United and academy graduates is a combination that has always walked hand-in-hand. Credit where it’s due, the Red Devils have never shied away from handing opportunities to the next generation. It’s exactly why the Old Trafford club have been so successful over the years.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, to his huge benefit, has continued that mantra. Marcus Rashford is a key cog, while Brandon Williams and Scott McTominay have both proved their worth within the first-team set-up.

Perhaps the biggest talent on the books right now is Mason Greenwood. The teenager is enjoying his breakthrough season upon Salford Quays – it’s just a shame that play has been stopped for obvious reasons.

Well, Gary Neville is the latest to laud praise on the talented United attacker, as he stated that Greenwood can be ‘anything he wants to be’, before adding that the Englishman is the ‘real deal’.

“I would say Mason Greenwood. He can be anything he wants to be.” Neville responded live on Sky Sports News, transcribed by the Manchester Evening News, when asked who is the most gifted youngster in the Premier League right now.

“He just looks like he’s got such great composure and quality. He’s great physically as well.

“If he continues to emerge like he’s shown at times this season I think Manchester United have got the real deal there.”

Honestly, this kid has it all. I’m still unsure as to which foot is his strong one as he’s so good off either. Greenwood’s clinical finishing is his best trait by a country mile, though he’s quick, great in building up play and an intelligent run-maker.

The scary thing is he’s still so far away from the peak of his powers. Training day-in-day-out with some of the best players in the world is undoubtedly helping Greenwood, but it’s going to be a couple of years before we see his best.

I just hope that Greenwood can stay injury-free. At this stage of his career, that’s what it’s all about. Look at how treatment table woes affected the likes of Timothy Fosu-Mensah and to an extent, Phil Jones… Greenwood needs to keep himself in tip-top shape and do his utmost to keep himself healthy.

For now, though, let’s just enjoy watching him grow and develop…
