Guillem Balague: Man United closely following Mario Fernandes

Manchester United will lose Antonio Valencia this summer, while who knows what’ll happen to another right-back, Matteo Darmian.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to fill that void within his squad as for all his best intentions, Ashley Young just isn’t good enough. Last night, Guillem Balague threw another name into the Red Devils ring; that of CSKA Moscow right-back Mario Fernandes.

Balague says that Fernandes is being ‘followed closely’ by United, amongst other sides.

Aged 28, Fernandes would bring experience to the table for Man United, having played over 300 professional games to date. Balague even goes as far as claiming that this boy will be a ‘summer bargain’ for whoever pays the €25m (£22m) asking price.

What’s most important to me is the fact that Fernandes ‘can run for days’. In the modern game, full-backs have to bomb up and down their flank for ninety minutes straight. Young simply doesn’t have the energy to do that anymore.

In terms of the transfer fee, Fernandes would be extremely cheap meaning he’d be allowed to play without any real spotlight on him. I’ve never seen him play but I feel fairly confident in stating that he’d have the starting job as soon as he walked through the Old Trafford door. That’s just how bad his ‘competition’ has been over the last twelve months…
