International round-up: Van Persie struggles, Fellaini scores and Kagawa impresses

Manchester United had no fewer than ten players representing their countries at various levels on Wednesday, with some impressive performances mixed in with rather poor ones. Marouane Fellaini and Shinji Kagawa were the pick of the bunch and both managed to get on the scoresheet.

England 1-0 Denmark

We’ll start with England. Wayne Rooney and Chris Smalling started for the Three Lions, with the latter managing to keep a clean sheet at Wembley stadium. Rooney, fresh after signing a new Manchester United contract a couple of weeks ago struggled from the outset last night and didn’t really create anything. Hopefully he’ll be in better form for United on Saturday. Danny Welbeck came off the bench and had a decent chance saved by Kasper Schmeichel. Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick were unused substitutes.

France 2-0 Holland

Patrice Evra and Robin van Persie both played in this one. Our French defender gave a very good account of himself and helped keep a clean sheet against a difficult Holland side. Robin van Persie struggled on the other hand, it seems that it isn’t just his United form thats lacking at the moment.

Poland 0-1 Scotland

Darren Fletcher made his international comeback after over a two year absence from his beloved Scotland. He helped control the midfield alongside Celtic’s Scott Brown, which led to an excellent 1-0 win against the talented Pole’s.

Ecuador 4-3 Australia

Antonio Valencia’s native Ecuador found themselves 3-0 down, but late into the second half they managed to nab a winner with Edison Menez nabbed a stoppage-time winner courtesy of an Antonio Valencia cross – He also bagged the levelling goal, too.

Belgium 2-2 Ivory Coast

Marouane Fellaini started the game for the World Cup dark-horses, and managed to give his side the lead with a super header early on. Unfortunately his side couldn’t hold on for the win.

Japan 4-2 New Zealand

Shinji Kagawa scored a penalty and created another goal in Japan’s 4-2 win over New Zealand, despite not featuring for United much in the past six weeks he still shown that he has much to offer when utilised properly.

Mexico 0-0 Nigeria

After a quiet 45 minutes, Javier Hernandez was subbed off as a precaution after picking up a knee problem. Hopefully its not too serious.

England U21s 1-0 Wales U21s

Michael Keane was set to start for the hosts, but was withdrawn before kick-off after picking up a knock. Wilfried Zaha and Jesse Lingard were both on the bench but didn’t manage to get on the pitch. The only representative for United was Tom Lawrence who came on for Wales in the second half.
