Manchester United Football Club take on LASK Linz tomorrow night, with the Red Devils 5-0 up. Ahead of the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Jesse Lingard will start.
The Baby Faced Assassin has the luxury of being able to change pretty much his full starting line-up due to the emphatic first-leg lead. In his pre-match press conference, the Norwegian gave us some all-important team news.
The 27-year-old United star Lingard is set to make only his second post-lockdown start tomorrow night. His first came against Norwich City in the FA Cup quarter-final back in June.
“Jesse [Lingard] will be starting tomorrow, but the team won’t be too different to the last time we played LASK away in March,” Solskjaer is quoted as saying by ManUtd.com.
I don’t doubt that his goal against Leicester City on the final day will have done his confidence the world of good. However, we’re going to need to see better from Lingard.
He’s had a poor season, that goes without saying. There’s still a good player in there, though, and I appreciate that he’s had some tough personal stuff to deal with.
Could it be too late?
Perhaps it’s already too far gone and Solskjaer’s mind is made up. Apparently, United won’t stand in Lingard’s way if he wants to move on this summer. With the imminent addition of Jadon Sancho, that does make sense.
When you factor in that Lingard also hired Mino Raiola as his agent, you do get the impression that the Warrington-born-winger knows his time at Old Trafford is up.
Perhaps he’s now playing to impress potential suitors. You’d hope that a mid-to-high-level Premier League side would make their move for Lingard. I can see him at an Everton, Newcastle United or a club of that ilk.
For now, it’s about performing well in the moment. He has to put on a good display tomorrow night to remind everyone of his capabilities.
