Manchester United Football Club take on AFC Bournemouth this weekend, as the Red Devils begin a huge week containing three tricky away fixtures.
Jose Mourinho met the media beforehand, with the manager confirming that Alexis Sanchez and Jesse Lingard are both ready to return. However, there was some bad news, as Diogo Dalot and Marouane Fellaini have both been ruled out.
Then the manager was asked about Antonio Valencia, and the self-proclaimed Special One didn’t hold back… He seemed to take a dig at the man from Ecuador for something he posted on Instagram about trying to return to full fitness…
‘Antonio Valencia, I watched something funny in his Instagram where he says ‘work, work, work’ in the gym,’ said Mourinho, per The Metro.
‘He should say ‘work, work, work’ alone because I’m injured and cannot train with the team.
‘So the reason why he was in the gym is because he is injured and he couldn’t train with the team. So I think it looked like he was working really, really hard – and he was – but without the ball and without the team. So, you can imagine that tomorrow he is not selected because he is not ready.’
Honestly, I’m not quite sure what to make of Mourinho’s comments. It definitely seems as though the manager is making a sly dig at the 33-year-old right-back as he’s currently unavailable for selection, but I’m not too sure…
It’s probably nothing, perhaps the manager was just having a joke with the press, but it does sound like a sly dig at the player who is clearly trying his best to get back to fitness as soon as possible.
In the meantime, it’s down to the experienced Ashley Young to continue filling in. To be fair to the Englishman, he has been playing brilliantly recently, and we’ll need some more defensive masterclasses from the veteran over the next few games.
