Jose Mourinho is aiming to block a potential move away for Sergio Romero in January, according to The Sun.
Apparently, the 30-year-old goalkeeper wanted to leave Old Trafford on loan, regarding fears about his Argentina World Cup place with Russia 2018 looming.
The veteran had hoped that Mourinho and United would allow him to leave on a six-month loan deal, but obviously, that has been rejected and it makes perfect sense.
David de Gea is United’s undoubted #1, but what happens if he were to get an injury that’d rule him out for the remainder of the season? If we allowed Romero to leave, the only option we’d have is young Joel Pereira, who is clearly talented but not yet ready.
My issue comes due to the fact that Romero penned a new contract earlier on in the year. If he was so unhappy here, then why would he commit his long-term future to the Reds? He knew the World Cup was just around the corner when he signed on.
At the end of the day, I understand his reasoning, but United were never going to allow him to leave. Romero will get his opportunities, heck, he played last night against Bristol City in the Carabao Cup…
