Manchester United Football Club could well be on the lookout for another midfielder this summer, particularly if Marouane Fellaini departs Old Trafford.
One name recently linked with a move to join the Red Devils is Aleksandr Golovin. The Russian, 22, lit up the World Cup with a stunning display against Saudi Arabia.
The CSKA Moscow man scored an outstanding free-kick, while also tacking on two assists for his teammates. The display certainly got United fans interested in his talents. Jose Mourinho was also rather impressed, too.
United’s boss is currently working as a World Cup pundit for Russian TV station RT, according to The Metro, this is what the self-proclaimed Special One said about Golovin:
‘I think Alan Dzagoev was playing quite well but when he came out, the fact that Golovin could go to a more central position, I think it helped the team.’
‘The team became better. Golovin is a playmaker, he’s a player that gives the dynamic of the team. ‘Denis Cheryshev is a fast boy on the wing, more of a winger than Golovin, stretch the game more than Golovin, so I think the change worked perfectly.’
This is obviously high praise indeed. As Mourinho alludes to, Golovin looked menacing down the flank, but he was even better when he played through the middle. He’s a quick-thinker, has great positional sense and is technically brilliant.
I guess the only issue with the performance is that it’s probably bumped up his price-tag rather considerably. Russia are in a tough group alongside Uruguay and Egypt. If Golovin mirrors that display against those two teams, then we may well have some stiff competition for his signature.
Golovin is young, hungry and clearly ready for a move to an elite European club. This was a high level game for him, under such immense pressure. Don’t forget that Russia hadn’t won in seven prior to yesterday. He turned up when his team needed him the most; that’s the kind of attitude we need at United.
