Manchester United Football Club progressed into the semi-finals of the Europa League last night, thanks to an extra-time goal courtesy of Marcus Rashford. On the whole, the Red Devils deserved to go through as they were creating chances galore.
To my surprise, Luke Shaw was given a chance to start which has been a rare occurrence for the young Englishman this season. To be fair to the young man, he was absolutely brilliant from first minute right through to last.
He definitely sent a message to the manager due to the quality of his display, and Mourinho came out and spoken about just how impressed he was with Shaw afterwards.
The Portuguese has claimed that Luke Shaw did something new during the game, and that means a lot to him as the left-back put his body on the line, allowing the manager to make a change elsewhere on the field.
“I always trust the players with special mentality,” Mourinho said, as per Sky Sports. “Always trust them. Luke Shaw did something new today, it means a lot for me.
“After 90 minutes, before I know that I have to change Zlatan, he had cramp, I had Ashley Young ready to come on, and he told me I’m going to play for 30 minutes with cramps, no problem.”
“He said if you need to make a change in another position I am ready for it.”
“These kind of things make me trust the players. There are technical aspects, but the mentality is the reason why I kept Marcus on the team all the time, because of that.”
Well, Luke Shaw did say that he was going to prove Mourinho wrong and this is definitely a good starting point. Reading stuff like this is just brilliant, and huge praise has to go out to the player for not giving up.
He has kept working hard and he obviously must be doing something right in training to get an opportunity to start in such a vital fixture. This is just the start for him, and now we have to hope that he can push on from here and really make that left-back slot his own, because he certainly has the quality to do exactly that.
