Jose Mourinho confirms one guaranteed starter for Anderlecht game

Manchester United are in a rich vein of form at the moment, most notably due to our solid defence. Right now we’re still fighting it out in both the Europa League and the Premier League, and that has led to plenty of rotation from the boss.

The trend for Europe has been that Sergio Romero has started those matches, and on the whole, he has done brilliantly. Some of the saves he has made have kept United in games and he has commanded his back four just as good, if not better than De Gea.

Today, Jose Mourinho met the media to discuss all things pre-Anderlecht, and he did give us a bit of early team news; Sergio Romero will start.

“No, he’s not my goalkeeper for the Europa League. He’s my goalkeeper for tomorrow.” Mourinho told reporters when he was asked about whether the Argentina international was his European goalkeeper.

“He was my goalkeeper in the other matches, but he’s not my goalkeeper for the Europa League. I never like to do that complete separation. I can say the priority for Sergio is to play in the Europa League, yes, but we had some matches where David played.”

“David’s priority is to play in the Premier League but I don’t like the complete separation. I cannot say every match is for one or the other. The reality is that Sergio is very stable, he’s very experienced, he’s playing very well. He played in the Premier League [against Sunderland], he played well. He played in the FA Cup, he played well. He played in the League Cup, he played well.”

The self-proclaimed Special One really does have a tough job on his hands. We have two reliable goalies, both of whom have their own qualities. To be fair to the pair, they’ve hardly put a foot wrong all season, and it’s pretty clear that our boss has huge faith in the pair.

I guess the good thing is that both are playing plenty of minutes right now and if one does go down with an injury, the other can pick up that load and come in ready to play. For now, though, it definitely makes sense to stick with what’s working at the moment, and we’ll be seeing David de Gea on the bench at Old Trafford tomorrow.
