Manchester United have already added two new players to the first-team squad this summer, with Jose Mourinho sanctioning moves for both Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof. However, it has always seemed likely that a new midfielder will come through the doors, especially after the boss confirmed he wants one.
One of the names linked with a potential move to the Theatre of Dreams was Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier, but now the gaffer has had his say on their situation, and told us all that they will keep everyone they want to keep – including the aforementioned Englishman.
In the same interview, he also added that he thinks United are candidates for the title, but not ‘big’ candidates. To me, this feels like he doesn’t really fancy us to go all the way this season which is a bit of a concern.
“I don’t think we are big candidates for the title but we are [candidates].” Jose Mourinho told The Guardian. “Everybody speaks about the dimension of the investment at Man City [so far just below £220m] but there is another team that I feel the dimension of their investment is also phenomenal – Tottenham.”
“Until now they spent zero pounds, right? They keep everybody they want to keep. They keep Dele Alli, [Harry] Kane and [Toby] Alderweireld, they keep Eric Dier, they keep everyone they want to keep.”
First of all, I’m over the moon that we won’t be signing Dier whether we wanted to or not. He’s a decent player, but in all honesty, he’s nothing more than that. We need those elite level footballers to come in, and we should be setting our sights much higher than Dier.
I am a bit annoyed that Mourinho has come out and publicly said that he doesn’t see us as big title candidates though. First of all, it puts it in the player’s heads that they don’t have to win the trophy this year, meaning they could slack off a little bit.
At this point in time, it just doesn’t feel like the right thing to say, particularly when a lot can change in the transfer market as it is still open for around another five weeks.
